A unique new study indicates the physical and mental health of people who feel like they are part of a community is generally better than the health of those who feel socially isolated.

Trust Leads to Better Health

Researchers studied data from nearly 1,000 pairs of twins and discovered the effects of a sense of trust and belonging apply regardless of differences in genetics and upbringing.

The relationship between community and health is complex, however. The study discovered that social connectedness seems to have no effect on rates of major depression. Additionally, while most people have greater access to support as a result of their connectedness, engaged members of low income communities find themselves bearing the burden of greater obligations.
