Information presented at the 50th Annual American Headache Society Scientific Meeting on the effectiveness of a sumatriptan patch showed it was as effective as the injectable form and more effective than the oral form of the drug.

Researchers said drug delivery is more predictable when it bypasses the gastrointestinal system as it does in the injectable and patch forms. The patch form avoids nausea-related complications often experienced by migraine patients.

The patch was well tolerated by study subjects. Very little skin irritation was observed as a result of use of the patch.

Sumatriptan is the active ingredient in the brand name product Imitrex.
