Major Step Forward in Improving College Opportunities and Supports for Students with Disabilities Taken with Higher Education Act Reauthorization

The Higher Education Act of 2008, signed into law by President Bush this week, takes a few important steps to ensure equal access to educational opportunities for all students.

The law:
  • Provides assistance to faculty, staff and administrators working to educate students with disabilities;
  • Establishes a technical assistance center within the Department of Education;
  • Creates a committee to develop educational materials for students with print disabilities; and
  • Allows students with intellectual disabilities to access Pell and federal work study grants for the first time.
